Roger Conway

Adjunct Professor of Management

Roger Conway retired from the Center for Creative Leadership; he was a senior fellow who served as program manager for leadership at the Peak, and the US Navy flag officer programs. He has had extensive experience in supporting the design and development of corporate universities such as General Motors’s Leadership Your Perspective, Boeing’s Boing Executive Program, US Navy’s Flag Officer Program, and Whirlpool’s Developing Whirlpool Leaders. While LAP Program Manager, he initiated research on organizational politics, a revision of the lessons of experience research, and executive churn. Conway’s pro-bono work has included sponsorship of doctoral interns; organizational development work for the San Diego Zoological Society, UC San Diego, and the San Diego Police Department. Areas of special interests include senior executive development, executive survival, executive teams, criminal justice and diversity. He has just completed over six years of work with the US Navy’s executive learning officer to enhance new flag officer training and leadership programs for their uniformed and non-uniformed executives. He received a sabbatical leave from the Center for Creative Leadership to work with the US Navy on its merger of two three star commands in education and human resources, and financial management and financial planning.

Prior to joining the Center for Creative Leadership in 1995, Conway spent 29 years in higher education; 26 were in the general management of the non-profit, education sector. He had responsibility for major capital projects, including large new construction, renovations, and the operational responsibility for major revenue-generating operations such as retail food services. Conway was an adjunct professor in the management department of the College of Business at Cal Poly, and at the University of Rhode Island. He received research grants for the study of leadership and diversity. Conway’s sabbatical leaves involved major projects with the US Department of Justice, Law Enforcement Assistance Administration. These projects included creating employment entry criteria that would survive court challenges, developing training programs for law enforcement, and reducing civil liability. He played a major role in creating a risk retention group for a consortium of California non-profit organizations. He was past president of the California Auxiliary Organization Association.

Conway received an AB from Rutgers-The State University in Business, an MA in Counseling, and advanced graduate study in organizational management and industrial relations from the University of Rhode Island. He completed the requirements for program specialist in organizational development from National Training Laboratories. His doctoral degree is in public administration from the University of La Verne, where he conducted research on the development of leadership skills in the workplace using 360-degree feedback and coaching. He was a contributing author to Behavior in Organizations: An Experiential Approach. Major professional affiliations include the Academy of Management and the Organizational Development Network.
