The UCR School of Business Administration, in partnership with Beacon Economics, releases an economic forecast for the Southern California region that provides signs of a beginning but slow recovery.

Panelists discuss the future of the Inland Southern California economy.

On November 9, the UCR School of Business Administration and Beacon Economics co-hosted "A Region in Transition: 2010 Riverside/San Bernardino Economic Forecast Conference." At the event, held at the Riverside Convention Center, Beacon presented an economic forecast for Inland Southern California to an audience of 450 business community members.

In the past, UCR released economic forecasts that were counted on by the business community.  The UCR School of Business Administration, in partnership with Beacon Economics,  has restarted the annual forecast event and will also provide quarterly updates in response to the community’s desire to continue the forecasting activities.

David W. Stewart, dean of the UCR business school, said, “As a land grant institution and the only research-based business school in inland Southern California, it is our mission to stay engaged with the economic welfare of our region.”

Doing so is important for the Inland Southern California region in particular, Stewart says. "We have a significant, though often overlooked, manufacturing base to build upon," he said. "And we have the key locational advantages of distribution infrastructure, ready access to both domestic and export markets, and the potential for stable sustainable electricity rates with the growth of solar, geo-thermal, wind, and other new sources of energy. No other part of the country has this winning combination.”

Featured speakers at the event included Christopher Thornberg (Founding Principal, Beacon Economics) and Brad Kemp (Director of Regional Research, Beacon Economics). The event also featured a panel discussion featuring Iddo Benzeevi (President & CEO, Highland Fairview), Peter B. McWilliams (Managing Director, Industrial Services, Jones Lang LaSalle), Dr. Alfredo Martinez Morales (Managing Director, Southern California Research Initiative for Solar Energy), and Roy Paulson (President & CEO, Paulson Manufacturing).
