Dean Wang with three remarkable attorneys. On January 10, Dean Yunzeng Wang met with three Southern California attorneys with connections (many dating back several decades) to UCR and its business school:  Justice John Gabbert, David Robinson, and William Thomas.

At age 103, Justice John Gabbert has quite a history in Riverside.  He was a partner at Best Best and Gabbert from 1938-1949; his name was dropped for the Krieger name when California Governor Earl Warren appointed him to a judgeship for the Riverside County Superior Court. Justice Gabbert is referred to affectionately by attorneys and civic leaders in the region as the "Eighth Wonder of the World."

One of those whom Justice Gabbert has deeply influenced is UCR alumnus David Robinson (B.A. 1979). Formerly a pre-medicine major, Robinson switched to political science after taking a class with Justice Gabbert in the 1970s. He is now the president and founding partner of Enterprise Counsel Group, based in Irvine, California. One of his three sons has followed in Robinson's footsteps by attending UCR as a business student currently in his senior year.

One of Robinson's close friends, William Thomas, is currently the Executive Vice President and General Counsel for the KPC Group, whose corporate headquarters are located in Riverside. Just like Justice Gabbert and Robinson, Thomas has connections with UCR, having served as a member of the business school Dean's Advisory Council (DAC) in the past. He chaired the DAC for nearly three years back in the 1990s.

Dean Wang said, “I left our meeting excited to have met these three remarkable men and heard their stories. It is my great hope that they will continue to be involved in the story of UCR and its business school for many more years to come.”
